Philip Morris USA's Statement on Virginia Excise Tax Proposals
RICHMOND, VA (January 26, 2004) -
As a longstanding Virginia-based corporation with operations throughout, Philip Morris USA has a vested interest in the economic well-being of the Commonwealth. Tens of thousands of Virginians rely on the tobacco industry for their livelihoods, including employees, retirees, retailers, wholesalers, suppliers and tobacco farmers.
As an organization and as citizens of Virginia, Philip Morris USA believes that we should all proportionately share the economic burden in the state.
The proposals that have been put forth so far have been excessive with regards to state and local cigarette taxation and would place a disproportionate or sole burden on the tobacco industry, and those who rely upon it. Philip Morris USA is opposed to these proposals.
We look forward to working with the Governor, the General Assembly and business leaders to determine the best solution to the economic challenges we are all facing.
