The Youth Tobacco Prevention (YTP) department engages in ongoing research so that our work is based on a solid foundation.
Our research has included:
- staying current on the latest developments in the field of reducing underage tobacco use, including related fields such as positive youth development;
- conducting research to support the development and evaluation of our underage tobacco use prevention programs and communications;
We also use research results from numerous external studies to help us better understand the issue of youth tobacco use in the U.S.
For several years, the YTP department commissioned an external research firm to conduct the
Teenage Attitudes and Behavior Study (TABS). During that time, TABS measured the prevalence of youth tobacco use (including cigarette smoking) in the continental United States and helped the department in understanding what may differentiate adolescents who smoke or use other tobacco products from those who do not. This information complemented existing national studies, helping guide our YTP department's strategy, communications and grant program priorities.

website for detailed information about the study methodology, research questionnaire and results.
